The New Band on the BlockDr.Grant Moffat |

Obesity is a serious health issue in our society. Many people have faced a life-long struggle with being overweight as they have tried and failed traditional approaches to weight loss. Weight loss surgery, or Bariatric surgery may be the only effective long term solution for many severely obese individuals. Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (Lap-Band) offers the benefit of keyhole or minimally invasive surgery with a procedure that is safer than other obesity surgeries such as gastric bypass or stomach stapling. To date, more than 200,000 Lap-Band surgeries have been successfully performed worldwide, helping many patients gain control of their weight and their life.
The basic principle is that an adjustable constricting band is placed around the upper part of the stomach. This creates a new smaller stomach pouch and a narrowed outlet, limiting the stomach’s capacity and increasing the feeling of fullness. The reduction in food intake, diminished appetite and slower digestion result in gradual weight loss. Patients still need to follow a diet an exercise program, but this procedure makes it easier to stick with it. Average sustained weight loss from adjustable gastric banding averages around 60% of excess body weight after one year, for the right patients. A significant percentage of those who suffer from obesity-caused type II diabetes or high blood pressure will no longer need their medications as a result of the weight loss.
It is important to understand that despite the promising results, this procedure is not for everyone and it is not a magic solution. The ideal patient is under the age of 55, is at least 100 pounds overweight, has not had any significant abdominal operations in the past and is motivated to make major changes in eating and exercise habits. Like with any surgery, possible complications do exist, some of which may require another operation and possibly removal of the band. There are no guarantees that everyone will achieve their ideal body weight. Failure to follow the diet, or to increase the level of physical activity may result in less than satisfactory results.
Research indicates that laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding is a safe, effective alternative to achieve long-term, significant reduction of excess weight. The success rate is increased when the patient is treated at a specialized clinic, involving a multidisciplinary team able to provide nutritional and psychological support and follow-up. Despite the amazing results of Lap-Band surgery, the procedure is not currently covered by OHIP. It costs between $15 000 - $20 000 however, financing is available.
