The Canadian Sudden
Arrhythmia Death Syndromes (SADS) Foundation
A registered charitable organization established in 1995 by a group of parents and health care professionals who recognized the need to identify those at risk of a preventable sudden death due to treatable arrhythmia disorders.
Mission Statement:
To save the lives and support the families of children & young adults who are genetically predisposed to sudden death due to heart rhythm abnormalities.
Facts about Sudden Death & Cardiac Arrhythmia Disorders:
Cardiac arrhythmia disorders such as Long QT Syndrome and ARVD and other cardiomyopathies are identifiable and treatable. Early medical intervention is the key to preventing an unnecessary death.
Four out of ten children and young people die with their first symptom.
Annually there are 500,000 cardiac deaths in the United States(statistics for Canada are not available), of these approximately 37,500 remain unexplained or have an unknown cause of death.
Many arrhythmia disorders are genetic. Families with a history of sudden death need to have their living family members checked by a physician who is knowledgeable about causes of sudden cardiac death.
